Belt buckle and pouch updates

Things do pile up when you don't have the capabilities to upload pictures. Thankfully I now have that ability again!

Earlier this year I collaborated on yet another project with Elleth, this time a custom belt buckle from her shapeways store. Sadly it took me this long to get a pic of it up due to having no computer. Needless to say the buckle is awesome like all of her work! Design wise it is very Middle Earth. It's small details like this where I like to branch off of what's available via history and the market there in to add character to my persona. I went with the bronze steel option with the intent to go back for a solid bronze at a later date. Thanks again Elleth!

Moving on I've also greatly downsized my belt pouch to less than half the size of my old one. This is made from heavy goatskin and has had a long soak in walnut dye and been heavily rubbed with dubbin. Size wise it is just big enough to hold my oiler from Backwoods Tin and Copper wrapped in a swatch of sheep skin, my Viking style whetstone, and the greased leather bag that contains my fire kit.

In The Fellowship of the Ring chapter XII The Flight To The Ford it mentions of Aragorn "From the pouch at his belt he drew out the long leaves of a plant." It says nothing else regarding the pouch but I imagine it would be just large enough to hold a few essentials.

Oh my... that came out nice!!

What's that roll that's between the tinderbox and (I assume) tow?
Do you have an issue with the oiler opening/spilling/leaking while travelling?

That would be my striker. I keep it wrapped in a square of soft leather to avoid clanking against my fire box.

No issues with spillage yet. I keep the oiler filled with lanolin.

Ha! The lanolin oil I ordered arrived yesterday. :)

May I ask what if anything you use for a period, portable polishing agent? Or do you not find that necessary?

I do not carry a polishing agent. In times of need I have used a bit of sand mixed with oil from my pack to make a crude paste to polish a blade. With a bit of knife work you can split up a bit of deadwood for a polishing block, works quite well in a pinch. Ive also ground sand between two rocks to make it finer for a better polish.

I decided to revamp this project as I felt it’s predecessor to shapeless and plain, even for my taste.

What I came up with isn’t much fancier but feels a bit more like it belongs to my eye. Like I said nothing to crazy nor indeed to planned. Simply what I saw in my minds eye scratched onto some goatskin with a bit of charcoal from the fire, cut and crafted from what was in my sewing kit, walnut dyed and heavily rubbed down with dubbin. All it contains is my fire kit, small viking style whetstone and small copper Oiler and a swatch of sheep skin to rub down my gear and weapons with.

What I suppose really "sells" the updated pouch to me is the little tip on the bottom. Gorgeous work as always, Ursus!

The design was actually semi inspired by the tips on Elleths and Uthgards quivers.

Lovely! I always enjoy slightly more complex shapes, as long as they feel organic, and well suited to the culture. And this one is just that!

Both pouches looked good. Though I may need to get some of that dubbin.
