Southern Appalachian Elk

Post by R.D.Metcalf »

About 45 mins from my house there is a herd of re-introduced Elk this herd has been here for several years and now numbers over 200 animals. On a hike yesterday I got close enough to snap some pics with my phone. Thought y'all might enjoy'em.

These are absolutely amazing creatures and yesterday the bulls were bugling which is one of the most beautiful and primal sounds I've ever heard. It was awesome to see these creatures this close and for the first time in a very long time I found some hope for the future of our wilderness. I also put eyes on a bear yesterday but it was gone before I could get my pic phone into action. The pic of the bull was taken on a large pixel setting at less than 30 yards distance.

The dominant bull whos harem you see in pic 2 had just locked horns with this youg'un and drove him to another part of the feild. I didnt want to crowd him but I got as close as possible. Generally speaking my experience with cattle tells me the losing bull is more dangerous than the winner in these "hypersexual donnybrooks" .
