There's a separate link there where someone used a fully threaded rod and an eyebolt. That seems a lot easier, if angled a bit weird.

Possibly in Whelen? Probably in in some 1970's back-to-the-land book?

Anyhow, I don't remember details, but suspect it was something like this:

Not saying it's the best solution, simply a different place on the weight/time/comfort tradeoff. :)
