Ranger pack
Ranger pack
With the addition of the side straps,I think my pack is right where I want it.
The straps act as compression straps when the ruck’s not full. Super happy that Tolkien wrote packs into Middle-earth.

Andy, What are the two arrows outside the quiver for? Are they field points and hunting heads stay in the quiver?
Re: Ranger pack
Hey Peter, the arrows in the quiver are field tips or bodkins. The arrows on the outside are broad head hunting tips. The shearling inside the quiver is great for keeping the arrows still and silent but doesn’t work for broadheads.Peter Remling wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 5:47 pm Andy, What are the two arrows outside the quiver for? Now THAT is a nice bag.
Life is a great adventure; if I live to be 10,000 years old, it won't be enough.

Re: Ranger pack
I would have thought the opposite as the broadheads look like they'll catch on those retaining straps. Looking good!A Mayer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 11:46 pmHey Peter, the arrows in the quiver are field tips or bodkins. The arrows on the outside are broad head hunting tips. Re: Ranger pack
Hey Peter, I grab the arrows down near the head, lift them out of the pocket, then pull the arrow down and out. The fletching slides down through the upper shearling straps.Peter Remling wrote: ↑Thu Jun 15, 2023 4:25 pmI would have thought the opposite as the broadheads look like they'll catch on those retaining straps. Re: Ranger pack
I dug out some old pics of my basic pack from a defunct computer. Downloaded to a thumb drive, uploaded to the current computer, and found out the files were too large. Bumped them over to imgur and hopefully they will come out: 1st pick is the pack itself. It's an old military pack I painted a brownish as the original color was olive green. I added the straps to the sides and bottom.:

https://i.imgur.com/TPsTauz.jpg Bear in mind, these pics were taken for a Post Apoc contest so you may see some things that don't jive with the ME setting.
https://i.imgur.com/KYSIDfk.jpg The short sword you see here is an old AC straight kindjal that I modified back around 82 with a brass guard and pommel and a leather wrap over wood grip. The short spear is made from an old straight hoe. The haft is marked in different colors every inch and is used as a tracking spear. When tracking, the length of stride can indicate if the quarry is moving faster or slower. The speed of the quarry may indicate whether it is aware of someone tracking it or whether it is slowing down if wounded.
https://i.imgur.com/ReIh4kh.jpg This pic has a number of items you wouldn't expect to see in a ranger's pack: the grappling set, thieves....err locksmith's tools and picks, the small glass vials that contain oil, and the scope. The eating knife in this picture was won in a contest I entered. I like photo contest and have entered and run a few in the past. So far I've won 2 swords a handaxe and the knife. Maybe I'll run another in the near future.
https://i.imgur.com/iaEEiPJ.jpg This pick shows how a ranger's equipment would be dispersed. In better weather the blanket would be under the pack, strapped to the bottom and a cloak rolled and strapped at the top. That bow case is carrying a longbow, but I'd prefer to use my smaller case with my smaller recurve hunting bow. in this pic, I'm carrying a full size spear, not the tracking spear from the previous pictures. The first grouping and the last pic were taken at different times.

Re: Ranger pack
Peter, these are great. Some old school! Spot on with the tracking info. I usually keep the tarp on top or somewhere on the outside. In colder climates I also always keep a warmy (cloak, sweater, or something) on top for extended stops.Peter Remling wrote: ↑Thu Jun 22, 2023 5:33 pm I dug out some old pics of my basic pack from a defunct computer. Re: Ranger pack
I still have a canvas dropcloth/tent mentioned about 1/2 way down this old thread.

When I originally posted this I was using a wool blend emergency blanket. I subsequently got the red 100% wool blanket so if I wrapped them up today the dimensions would be a good deal larger.

Re: Ranger pack
Peter and A Mayer, those packs look great!
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.
