Arbedo--New Ranger Sword?

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

Arbedo--New Ranger Sword?

Post by Barandir »

I've been wanting to get my hands on this particular model of sword for most of a decade, and I finally managed to get one! It's my preferred size for a Ranger sword, a bastard sword with the blade length of a medium-length arming sword. I'm also a sucker for Type XVIIIa blades like this, especially when they're almost wide enough to be an XVIIIc. I'm seriously thinking this will be my Ranger sword, even if the Kingston Arms XIIIa is probably more book friendly. The XVIII blade type is very similar to the XIV, which is probably my other favorite blade typology, and runs in pretty much the exact proportions as Boromir's sword from the movies.

What do you guys think?

Re-wrapped the grip on this one too! Came out a little cleaner this time.

Can't wait to make a new scabbard for it.

Nice job on the grip wrap. When you get to the scabbard if you dont mind some pics of the process, I need to try and make a scabbard for one of my swords.

No prob! I'm going to try a new method for making the core. Previously I've used 1/4" poplar planks and a three layer construction for a core that I shaved down and shaped with a small planer, but I'm going to try using 1/8" boards soaked and wet-formed around the blade for this next one.

As a suggestion, add some packing between the blade and the wood when you wet form. If it ends up a little loose its easier to fix then if its tight and you can't get your sword out.

Thanks, ForgeCorvus, I'll take note of that!

It's the discontinued Windlass model, I got it off the used market!
