Avatars

Post by Eric C »

Okay folks. The Avatar feature has been activated. I'll be danged if I know how to resize my pic to set it as an avatar. BUT it has been activated! We only ask that you keep it clean and keep it LOTR related. Other than that, the only rule: Help me set an avatar! Have fun.

Use Microsoft Paint or some similar program to crop or shrink an image you want to the proper size (Usually 100x100 or 50x50). If using Paint, you shrink using the stretch/skew feature--just don't forget to skew both dimensions the same amount!

Okay, I cropped a picture- it wouldn't tell me the size. I tried to set it as the avatar. The User Control Panel tells me the file must be between 0 and 6 Kib. I'll check again, but I think that's what it called it.

Yep, that's what it said. It is also not square. I'll keep playing with it.

I'm trying to remember if there's an easier way to do it in Paint--these days I use GIMP, where you can just crop it as a square.

Even after I got my photo to 80x80, I had to mess with the quality to get it under 6 KB. Unfortunately, GIMP is the only program I know how to do that in.

Try this site:

It's what I used.

Use GIMP 2.0

Open the image, click image on the menu bar, click scale, adjust pixel size so both are 80 or less, click okay, save, upload to your CP.

I found that as long as it's a .gif and withing the 80x80 it should be under 6k...at least when using photoshop.

Thanks for setting up that feature! I've always liked, when on other forums, knowing who had posted simply by seeing their custom avatar images. Looking forward to getting to know some new electronic faces!

I use MS word for resizing Photos as MS paint sometimes distorts them.

Most people's avatars have disappeared for me. A few are still up, but quite a few have poofed. Anyone else seeing this?

I had to reload my avatar, maybe there was some site maintenance or something?
