Re: Cold weather gear

That stuff can surprise you. Mine is more of a loose weave for summer, but it still keeps me plenty warm when it gets cold, so long as it's not windy. Though if it does I just throw a cloak on. I kinda wish I had more chances to use winter garb, I prefer it to summer most the time.

Re: Leg Wraps?

I've got a pair with my main kit, using hooks rather than ties. They stay up fine if you do a good job wrapping them. I usually wrap them from the foot up but I imagine they'd stay up easier if you go from the top. I've not used any other pairs but my understanding is it's best if they're wool.

Re: Look & Feel

It's looking better than ever. Like Greg said, it does make it a lot easier to read. I actually had some trouble sticking with it before.

Re: Plans you want to see?

I'll have to see about getting my hands on a copy, I've always liked seeing the concept artwork from pretty much anything. I would have grabbed one now if I didn't get a new drive for my pc. And while working on the war chest plans I came to remember why I rarely make plans for things. I never remem...

Re: Plans you want to see?

They anything like the ones actually used in the movie? I can remember the ones I saw in the production blogs and can always go check those out.

Re: Plans you want to see?

Thanks. Feel free to make a suggestion if you think of something. I'll probably have the war chest plans done Friday unless I go nuts with it. I might include a quick drawing of what it should look like when finished. Ideally I'd have a 3D render, but the only 3D design program I can wrap my head ar...

Re: Plans you want to see?

Shouldn't be too hard. There are a lot of variables though. If you're storing a dane axe, longbow, or a full set of plate armor you're going to have a pretty big chest to lug around. Given how much empty space stuff like that would leave there probably wouldn't be an issue packing the maintenance eq...

Plans you want to see?

So I'm back again from my regularly unscheduled absence, and I remember the last time I said I would make and post some plans for the things I've built. Unfortunately I still haven't done that and the things I made are elsewhere so I can't get the measurements. However I can make new plans easily en...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

It makes sense that the honey helped preserve it. Honey is pretty antibacterial, antifungal, anti-whatever-else-there-is. I've seen talk about using it to cover wounds, especially burns, because of that. I'm pretty sure at some point I read about some foods being stored in honey, but I can't find a ...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

I figure I could throw a couple recipes in. Lembas. I'm not sure how well it would hold up on the trail, probably not well, but they are delicious. I think it comes out somewhere between shortbread, sugar cookies and thin biscuits, but it's been a couple years since I made it so I could be wrong. It...

Re: Box/Chest

I'd have to say little trinkets, coins, small kit items like flint and steel, and other random bits and bobs would suit it. I've been meaning to make a box for that stuff, right now I have it all floating around in a chest with everything else.

Re: Timber Framing Class at Tillers International (LOTS of p

Maybe I'll take a class one day, but it's just not in the cards right now. A lot of it looks like what I do with smaller builds...mortise and tenons are more or less the same no matter what, but there were also a lot of things I've never seen before in those pictures...and they all make perfect sense.

Great, now I want one. I won't have a need for a mead hall any time soon...a shop/mead shed would be more likely.

Re: Look & Feel

One thing I would do is add some tables to separate certain parts of each page, such as the contents, body, notes, etc. Not really necessary as it would only really be cosmetic, but it would make it look a little cleaner in my mind.

Re: Rivet, rivet, rivet...

I did help someone rivet a coat of plates or similar once... he was using what looked like copper roofing nails and washers. He was cutting the nails to about 1/4 inch after passing through the material and then flattened them, first with the peen to spread the metal and then the flat face of the ha...
