Re: Did the Men of Dale have a cavalry?

I really like that hexagonal shield!...when I tackle a Beorning shield Mk2, and have the funds for a nice hexagonal boss, I'll probably do something similar with my existing footprint theme. Gets away from the round shield 'viking' look while still being Germanic, but not so divergent as something l...

Re: Did the Men of Dale have a cavalry?

-An oval shield with pointy boss would be an excellent choice, both to differentiate from round-shield Rohirrim, AND to hearken back to our primary (visual!) source for hard kit of the northeastern cultural sphere. -As for Bladorthin, Andreas Mohn (Codex Regius) comes to the conclusion that he was a...

Re: Tall Boot Problems

'Riding pants' often have a 'stirrup' that goes under the instep and keeps pants from bunching or riding up.
I suppose alternately you could tuck your pants into your socks before putting on your boots.

Re: Love in the Elven culture

Welcome. If you're interested in these topics, I would recommend tracking down a copy of The Nature of Middle-earth , several sections of which include details on the Eldar perspective on procreation and childbearing and the phases of life associated with them. ' The Laws and Customs Among the Eldar...

Re: How far would a ranger range?

We also know that there were Rangers at Sarn Ford when the Nazgul approached the Shire, and that "Rangers go" to Fornost/'Deadman's Dyke'. Then there's this: "The hobbits had been nearly two months in the House of Elrond, and November had gone by with the last shreds of autumn, and De...

Re: Hard drinks in Middle Earth

Maybe elsewhere in Eriador, but fairly definitively not for Hobbits: HoME Vol 12 : The Appendix on Languages: $58. Note. In cases where 'folk-etymology' has operated to alter older (Elvish) names into the appearance of names in the C.S. special difficulty may be met, since it is unlikely that suita...

Re: Coinage

I can't quite make out what the design is on the Celtic quarter but I really dig the other three! I can definitely see the Elizabethan as something Gondorian, divided into 4 tharni as it is, while the Wotan head coin makes me think of something the Dunlendings would've had (assuming they had coinage...

Re: FINALLY Fleshing Out a Persona

I definitely hear you on the 'real-life surroundings don't track 1:1 to Middle-earth' conundrum... my family's farm where I grew up is right on the Ohio, therefore my Beorning and Bucklander personas are located on their rivers...but the Ohio makes a big loop and actually is running south to north w...

Re: Khazad Culture?

Speaking of Dain's red axe, I'd like to know how that was interpreted by everyone else when first reading about it. An axe rusted red? Metaphorically red/ perpetually covered in the blood of Dain's enemies? A red wood handle? Mythical unspecified red metal? Or simply an axe painted red? The blood o...

Re: Question on intro bows

I've noticed a high number of folks in this hobby gravitating towards 'horsebows' of late, and I would Strongly suggest against these for anyone who's not portraying a Rider of Rohan, Easterling, or possibly someone from northeast Rhovanion. I know it's tempting to think, 'well I live somewhere that...

Re: New legbands from Kram Bu.

Ooh, that weave is gorgeous. Very nice. I kitted up for my other period last weekend and realized the braintan thongs at the ends of my puttees kinda stand out and halfway go against the 'no visible fasteners' rule, so I for one would love to know how you've wrapped the tops of yours here!

Re: Buckskin - what cultures use it?

The young man with the braided lasso and the fellow with the pipe are great inspiration. Did you ever make progress on your 'pan-Northern' design language? I could easily see these decorated with some authentic M-e motifs. That looks really functional, although many have said the leather, while it p...

Re: Buckskin - what cultures use it?

Ray Mears did an episode of Bushcraft in Sweden, and interviews a Saami woman on how they make the leather for their clothes. Claims to use a birch solution, which sounds like barktan...but doesn't seem to involve months of slow soaking, and is finished with hand twisting to soften like you would br...

Re: What's everyone working on?

I've been working on a reconstructed karma helmet... Thats pretty fantastic, are we talking fully functional? Though it's a major headache considering the stylized nature and vague description of his sketch - that is the plan! As a workable prototype I'm just using cow rawhide and a cannibalized br...

Re: What's everyone working on?

During the day, urban homestead stuff and sewing weekly vest commissions for my galactic side-hustle, but in the evenings when I have freetime I've been working on a reconstructed karma helmet... I had intended it to be done for the next MERS newsletter but authentic materials and having to dip my t...
