Timber Framing Class at Tillers International (LOTS of pics)

This week I am taking a class on timber frame, or "post and beam" construction. This is the style of building you often see in old barns, and dates back centuries as a construction method. In PJ's films, think everything from Bag End to Bree to the Golden Hall. Timber framing involves basi...

Re: Ranger Boats and Watercraft

Interesting.... Has anyone ever made a bark-craft before? I've read about it numerous times, and somehow I always thought it would be impossibly hard; yet it was certainly done by many people for many years, so it's not quantum physics :D . I do like the coracle idea, though I don't suppose you coul...

Ranger Boats and Watercraft

Ok, not sure if this belongs here or in one of the more practical sub-forums, but here goes. The rangers were the descendants of the ancient sea-kings, and ships and shipbuilding was part of their cultural heritage. In FOTR, Strider is one of the ones in the company who is expert at handling boats -...

Re: Getting metal smooth and/or shiny

What I would do would depend somewhat on the project at hand - i.e., for armor I would spend a good amount of time planishing before any grinding. I've actually had good success with a belt grinder - I hate grinding, so the faster it gets done the better, IMO. I use a 2 hp grinder I built; as long a...

Re: Dunedain and Numenorean Music

Not to get too OT, but regarding the complexity of high numenorean culture, music, &c... There are a few things to take into account here: -Early on, they had much trade and (presumably) exchange of knowledge with the high elves of the west -Our own "high" technology in current days wa...

Dunedain and Numenorean Music

So, I was reading a few old threads about music, and it made me think: What would Dunedain music sound like? Now, the thread I was reading related mostly to instruments. What I'm thinking about is more style-wise. Have you ever heard a song and thought, "that sounds like it could have come from...

Ranger Duster?

So this is something I've been thinking about for a while, so I thought I would ask you guys. In FOTR, Strider wears a long leather coat sometimes referred to as a "duster" (shows up throughout, but maybe more prominent in FOTR). Reference pics here: http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Hum...

Re: New Members -Introduce yourselves

Yep, that's me. Both the elf armor and the rohirrim armor are made of leather. It's hard to see from the resolution of the picture, but there is horse stuff tooled all over that. One of my brothers does leather pretty extensively. We also made the vambraces I'm wearing, and I forged the rohirrim hel...

Re: New Members -Introduce yourselves

Well, I think the only pic I have is of me and my brothers at the opening of the hobbit. http://s169.photobucket.com/user/Luke_SkyMarcher/media/MarchGuysHobbit_zps05bf8e81.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0#/user/Luke_SkyMarcher/media/MarchGuysHobbit_zps05bf8e81.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0&_suid=13723663176520...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

I don't know about how difficult it is in general; I saw some at my local Meijer. I don't know if they have those in Colorado, though. (It's like a super walmart, only nicer).

Re: New Members -Introduce yourselves

Well, as I haven't officially introduced myself yet.... Hi! I'm from the west side of Michigan; I've been blacksmithing for the last several years, and my ranger gear (thus far) consists of a pretty decently accurate Strider costume, based on PJ's movies. I enjoy the outdoors, though I usually can't...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

....There's always a chia joke.... (my mom says the reason my hair is so think is because I eat chia  ) Well, I took my waybread out on a camping trip - it was quite popular, everyone who tried it said they thought it was really good. The consistency probably could have been better; I cooked i...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

Well, I'm finally getting the chance to try this again... Here's my Dunedain Lembas v. 1.1 1 Cup Chia (ground) 1 Cup Bread Flour 1 Cup Honey 2/3 Cup Flax Flour (this was an accident, I meant to keep it at 1/2) 1/2 Cup Almonds 1/2 Cup Pecans (in place of walnuts, which i couldn't find today) 1/4 Cup ...
