Re: wool
See if you can find Merino wool. It is supposed to be much less irritating. Smartwool uses Merino wool, and in fact the cloaks in LOTR were made from NZ Merino wool. So there's that.

Re: animal tracking
Eledhwen is right, there is no substitute for "dirt time", but if you can find a good teacher, by all means, make use of the opportunity. When you spot an animal (say a deer), wait until it leaves and try to find its tracks, and compare them to the behavior of the animal as you observed it...

Re: Jiu Jitsu
Also, there are western styles of grappling, such as folk wrestling Although, please, please don't start a glima debate or discussion , most texts from HEMA have sections for unarmed combat, pankration , and scientific wrestling or catch wrestling are also popular. You usually can find a judo profe...

Re: Bedroll carrying styles.
It seems like it would conflict with the wearing of a cloak. Note in the film, they are wearing packs and other burdens over their cloaks, which sort of defeats the purpose of the cloak, I'd think. I would put the cloak over whatever is on my back, in case of rain. Else, I would roll up the cloak an...

Re: Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern
So I am going to go ahead and "reboot" this, pun fully intended. I have a book on moccasins by Sylvia Grainger. It tells of a Penobscot moccasin, which is basically a standard ankle-high moc. I will make this, then proceed to her knee-high variation. This way, it will be customized for my ...

Re: Larger tarp shelters
My main idea about larger tents is that if it is housing multiple individuals is that one carries the tarp and others food and other gear, then the poles are their polearms. This is just supposition, I haven't seen depictions of tents other than late period pavilions. Here are some configurations I...

Re: Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern
When I compare their size-12 inner sole to a tracing of my size 11 1/2-EE flipper, my ancestry becomes clear immediately. I am the progeny of a lonely hobbit and a lovely Uruk-Hai lady.

Re: Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern
I found out that I didn't lose the instruction sheet - there really isn't one!
When I place the cutout of the inner sole onto the "sole" piece, there isn't enough room for the toes.

Tandy Plainsman Boot pattern
I got this pattern a while back, and hadn't looked at using it until just now. A member of my ranger community remarked that there might be mistakes in Tandy's pattern. If anyone knows, please let me know now before I start cutting leather! :) Thanks! http://d31snyb1jsf9xb.cloudfront.net/services/im...

If you'll notice Viggo in LOTR is sometimes carrying his cloak tied in such a manner.

Re: unconventional alternate source for tunics and clothing
Haha, I just found this.
When I was in the USN, we visited Karachi and I bought one of these outfits just for laughs. I think I still have the shirt.
Great idea!
