Re: New Canteen/Cooking pot
I'll try to answer the questions as best I can. Yes, it is tin lined and food safe. This was obtained for me by a very dear friend in Norway who reenacts the Napoleonic wars there fought between Denmark/Norway and Sweden. They can be had in Norway and Denmark for around 100$. The pot has a central l...

New Canteen/Cooking pot
So here's something a little different. A late 18th-early 19th century Danish cooking kettle that doubles as a canteen and was used by their soldiers in that period for both purposes. Comes with a leather sling for carrying. The sling is oak tanned leather and the adjustment buckle is hand forged ir...

Re: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Vikings
Nothing inherently wrong with Ringulf's post. I think most of us in the historical realm of reenacting are so used to folks posting stuff like this as a serious look into Viking culture that we are a bit turned off by it. Viking culture along with pirates, mountain man fur trade and ren faire folks...

Re: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Vikings
Wow! and they say Dwarves are too serious! Guys, loosen up! it was intended to be a humorous comparison to a motivational book but as if applied to vikings. No pearls of wisdom here, no secrets of life, just a bit of humor to pass the time. Jeez Dunadain! always with the negative vibes like...like....

Re: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Vikings
I wasn't considering it in the format it's presented in. Merely the false things it references regarding raiding and berserkers. I've seen things similar to this written and meant to be taken seriously and it's all research based on myth, nonsense, rumor and conjecture. So I wasn't positive it was a...

Re: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Vikings
Is this meant to be humorous? Because from a strictly historical perspective it's simply untrue.
If it is just meant to be funny, apologies for it going over my head so to speak.

Re: Need-Wallets Revisited: The Portmanteau Pack
Finally got most of the materials in that I need for mine... just in time for me to re-jigger my design somewhat. In the meantime, I've been combing the net for things that might have been the inspiration for Prof. Tolkien's "armed with an Eket, and carrying a need-wallet" image. I'd star...
Re: wool
For whatever it's worth Harris Tweed from Scotland is INCREDIBLE stuff. It's completely naturally dyed so you can't beat the color for authenticity, but I've worn my Harris Tweed in the pouring rain for hours on end and never got wet through it. It's light, soft, warm and just wonderful stuff. It's ...

Re: Hobbit Socks
HEH, find a 100% fantasy form of sock/stocking that is completely functional with out historical prescience. Fantasy in general is an alternate reality with it's styling taken from various periods of history. Unless you are doing Sci-Fi with wholly invented clothing fantasy is invariably going to mi...

Re: Hobbit Socks
Bag hose were universally worn in England, Scotland and Ireland through the 17th century. Knit hose were actually quite rare before the knitting loom boom of the 1730s. Knit stockings being more fragile and time consuming to make before the industrial loom was invented marked them as rather undesira...
