Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

In the mountains near my home, someone put together a small rock labyrinth. I hiked up there this past Friday and managed to get a few shots. https://i.imgur.com/fGx0uvp.jpg A bighorn sheep https://i.imgur.com/seUdxh4.jpg The trail was a stream bed for the first part, and some fallen trees made for ...

Re: Well met!

South Indiana sounds lovely. Making time for adventures is a challenge, and I too am building up my kit at a snail's pace. But one nice thing about this forum, besides everyone being so encouraging, is that you can post pictures of your trips and if you're not in them it doesn't matter what you're w...

Re: Hello all Rangers

I expect the Netherlands is a good place for reenactment; anyway I imagine it as rather Shire-like (maybe more like Buckland with all the canals?). Some day I hope to visit.

Yeah, I love these. They're inspiring me to watch for and seize opportunities as our spring advances here.

Re: Some modest musical morsels

Thank you Elleth, I'm very glad to read that. Again, sorry for the long delay in replying, as I've been away from the forum for a while... and, in that time, I revised "Dorwinion" and renamed "Lebennin" to "Lossarnach." And I made fresh recordings with layered percussio...

Re: Short Bocksten cloak

Oh hey I made that. You wear it well! Excellent - well met, and thank you! (The bag that you sent it in, I use to carry provisions, chiefly cram.) As always, I appreciate the encouragement. I wore it to work again today, in more rain. https://i.imgur.com/cyuwjHf.jpg And, to help me feel more ranger...

Elleth wrote: Wed Mar 15, 2023 10:03 am How interesting that they used finished bread for it*. Do you happen to know if the bread was usually stale/old, and if that made a difference?
Yes indeed: it was a way to use stale bread - though I expect that the demand for the drink led to a lot of bread deliberately left out to get stale.

Re: Preserving meat in salt

Excellent! I read Mark Kurlansky's book, Salt, a few years ago and have wanted to try salting meat ever since. It's encouraging to read of others' success.

Re: Middle Earth brewing

Not alcoholic, but I brewed my first batch of kvass over the past weekend. I like to bake bread, and although I know kvass was traditionally made with rye bread, I haven't learned how to bake rye bread yet, so I thought I'd try the wheat. I saved a few slices of a loaf that was all from hard red flo...

That looks really good, and that's a reasonable price. A very helpful review.

Re: Playing cards

For what it's worth, the Dwarf character in Iron Crown Enterprises' old Lord of the Rings Adventure Game (first module: "Dawn Comes Early") has a pack of playing cards listed among his equipment... ;)
