Re: Whenever we build that Inn...

they totally had bacon: “Now I know what a piece of bacon feels like when it is suddenly picked out of the pan on a fork and put back on the shelf!" "No you don't!" he heard Dori answering, "because the bacon knows that it will get back in the pan sooner or later; and it is to ...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

So then you would say that one couldn't simply take multiple herbs noted for a particular effect, and combine them? For example, taking the herbs you noted as being good for healing (plaintain, yarrow, calendula, and comfrey) and combining them all would not (necessarily) produce an effect better t...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

Thanks for the info herbcraft! no problem fellow michigander... This immediately causes me to wonder: is there any problem with just mixing every herb with healing properties into a "super-salve" that has it all? Because the (over)enthusiastic engineer in me always wants to optimize to th...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

Well, I finally gathered all the materials and made some of this up last night. First impression: That's a LOT of cayenne! Which, being granular, does not dissolve in the oil, and is too heavy to be suspended while the oil is liquid (hence the instruction to stir regularly while it solidifies.) you...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

nothing online as a course that I do. You best first bet would be to to join herbmentor.com; it's way cheap for the amount of content provided, and the content in generated by very well respected herbalists - it's education/empowerment based and not tied to a product line that's being sold (there ar...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

Oh: I left out a pretty significant salve preservative" balsam poplar (not balsam fir) buds. These are the sticky "cottonwood" buds that fall off the trees and stick to your feet, your cars, your dogs. These add a pain relieving effect to a salve, too, as they contain salicylates. I'v...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

Greetings Jim! Thank you so much for sharing your links page; I will be browsing it often! You are very correct - the coconut oil liquifies very easily, so care should be used when opening the container when melted (can be a big mess). Even when melted, the stuff works well. yup - efficacy isn't an...

Re: A 'Ranger" Salve and Brainstorming Projects

one consideration when using coconut oil is that while it's a great oil - stable, good penetration, and with healing virtues of it's own, its solidity is tempermental. So, depending on the preparation, what's solid sitting on a counter might be liquid on a hot day in a pack (or in your pocket... be ...

Re: A Shortcut to Mushrooms

I've collected hen of the woods (Grifola frondosa) and chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) for eating this fall; it hasn't been a great year - the summer was just so dry. I also use turkey tails (Trametes vulgaris) when making soup broth; they're incredible medicinals, but too tough to eat....

Re: Concerning Pipe-Weed

tobacco smoking is definitely not considered inherently unhealthy in the cultures it originated in. Throughout south and north america, tobacco was universally regarded as a "prayer medicine"... this didn't mean that only ceremonial use was ok, but that the reason you smoke tobacco was to ...

tea balls break. Always. Yes, they can be repaired easy enough, and a strainers nice to have, but woven cloth makes a better filter for fine grinds like coffee. For leaves/roots/barks, a quick strainer can be made out of grasses, stems, or other plant materials. Cleavers - galium aparine, can just b...

Re: Sodhopper style boots pattern!

I just ordered this (he sent it to me via email) and it's ~awesome~. WAY more detailed than the previously linked page. Highly recommended. In total it is 52 pages long and has 70 photos. To keep costs reasonable I send out the pdf file on a cd. That way you can print the instructions and still have...

Re: Sodhopper style boots pattern!

way cool. I also came across a guy who made a detailed doc on making them: In total it is 52 pages long and has 70 photos. To keep costs reasonable I send out the pdf file on a cd. That way you can print the instructions and still have the larger version of the photos to get a closer look at what is...
