Re: Several Cloak questions
Hey everybody, 1.) Is there a fabric that is light yet durable? Preferably that keeps you warm in 50ish degree weather but is cool enough to wear on all but the hottest summer days? Possibly a cotton/ linen blend? Or some other cloth? TexasRanger36 I've never found one cloak that will work year rou...

Re: A Dunadain Community?
The covered shelter is over the bread oven. The forge is behind the building to the left in the second picture. What, no pictures of the guardhouse and the sword wall? I volounteer at Jamestown and will be down there for Thanksgiving. Foods and Feasts is the event. We'll butcher a couple of hogs and...

Re: More pictures
Didn't make it to Crestfallen, I was out shooting colonial rebels at a Rev War event. Nice kit! How are you doing using the arrow bag as a quiver? My understanding of that is that it was a transport bag, rather than an actual quiver, and that the arrows would be removed and stuck in the ground or ca...

"added wear and tear and battle damage" strikes me as they didn't take the time to clean up the finished piece. Take a problem and turn it into a feature.

Re: more rangers.
75# traditional longbow, self nock arrows, and classic medieval points for 'em. :) Eledhwen I ordered a dozen new arrows at Pennsic. Self nocked, whipped fletches, and a point that is legal as a target point, but has the look and profile of a short bodkin. The only difference is that it is round in...

Re: more rangers.
I, also, am thinking I will join that group. I was in full 15th c kit this past weekend at Coronation, and actually had a photo taken that should well serve. It's been interesting over the past six months, putting together ranger kit at the same time I have been putting my 15th C routier kit on top ...

Re: Chinese Strider Swords
My problem with that is that you need to swing a lot of steel before you get something custom made. If you only want it as a carry piece, then whether it costs $100 or $2000, it's just a piece of jewelry. If you actually want a sword that you can use, then you need to learn a lot, first. What combat...

Re: Chinese Strider Swords
The fact that they want 69.99 for the sword and 57.00 for shipping makes me think this is a shady company. I don't think I'd take the risk, just on that basis.

Re: WMA - Spear Work
This is well-said, and is more or less what I aim for. When I'm out trekking, I only carry half a dozen arrows at most right now. If I were to be going to war, I'd load every shaft I had in my quiver. I don't always wear my chain maille, but I certainly would if I knew I was headed for trouble (kno...

Re: WMA - Spear Work
Understood. I have a Caucasion falchion of a 28 inch blade and a shell guard cutlass of 26inch blade, both rigged to hang vertically. These are my preferred weapons. As I put my Ranger kit together, I've acquired a Hanwei Practical cross hilt, as that seems to be the common style. I'm less than impr...

Re: WMA - Spear Work
I guess that's where I find this a bit confusing. The spear is a battlefield weapon. Whether fought as the Celts did, throwing the spear, or as a short spear used with shield, both of these are designed for open combat. My understanding of the Rangers is more of a stealth force and carrying spear in...
Re: Eket
I'll see what I can do. Computers are still pretty much magic boxes to me, and I'm only just transitioning from film to digital cameras. Luddite, that's me.

Re: WMA - Spear Work
Most of my spear training comes from work with the Japanese naginatas and yaris. I've added European quarterstaff to that, to round things out. I've also got a lot of experience with the European pike, but since that's 18 foot long and designed to be used in a block, it's not quite the same. My pref...
Re: Eket
On the top of the quiilon, close to the grip is 1387 over the block letters MRL.
On the other side, still on top of the quiilon is a mark that looks like two crossed falchions. Looks almost like two hockey sticks. Definitely not the Wolf Mark or the newer Shield Mark of Del Tin.

Re: Eket
One could also look at the cinquedea as a base. The description does not say if the blade is parallel and then pointed or tapers to a point from the ricasso. A broad bladed short sword, with a taper and point describes the cinquedea quite well. I've got one of the old, old cinquedeas from Museum Rep...
