Re: What's everyone working on?

Another scrap leather pouch! It's about 4"x6"x2" and the squared boxed top means it "seals" so small items like coins won't fall out. http://i.imgur.com/7n0PzOLm.jpg http://i.imgur.com/S0CeGK4m.jpg How many pouches are too many? I've got 6 now. All made from remnant scraps f...

Re: A Week in Scotland

It's been over 10 years since I took a brief trek on the Pennine Way, just south of the Scottish boarder. Seeing this makes me really want to get back.

Re: Leather canteen recipe

But do you mean to say that two pieces of smooth leather, with a proper pitch-wax sealing, can hold water? Yeah, man. I didn't have it on me at Ren Fest for you to see, but I made a large canteen with only veg tan leather (I think 6oz leather), beeswax, thread and a wooden stopper. I haven't tried ...

New oilcloth tarp. Made from a king size cotton bed sheet, lampwick loops, and 50/50 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. This will be much lighter and more compact than my previous 8x10 canvas tarp. http://i.imgur.com/wfJR8QZm.jpg Seen here, rolled up on my quiver before it's waterproofing. http...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Had a little adventure, testing out my gear at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. I think I've gotten my kit together pretty well. I need to finish my snapsack and waterproof my tarp and I'll be ready for another trek in a few weeks. Also had the pleasure of meeting 2 other GA Rangers face to face! C...

1 WEEK! Just a reminder, we are 1 week away from Georgia Ren Fest. Any Rangers attending opening day (April 15th), please meet at the Drunk Monk Pub at 1pm. Ranger garb is not required, so if you're dressed otherwise, please introduce yourself to any cloaked ranger you see!

Re: A Ranger's Hammock

I actually made a waxed canvas bedroll with sleeves at the ends. You can put rods and or rope in them to string it up as a hammock. However, I'm likely going to ditch this setup as it's quite heavy and instead go for a lighter oilcloth ground cloth. That said, no reason I couldn't add sleeves onto t...

Re: Light Source.

Lanterns are mentioned about 30 times in the books (quick word search). I specifically remember lanterns on farmer Maggot’s wagons and the lampwrights in Minas Tirath. The biggest issue for me is I couldn’t find any reference to what kind of fuel is used in the lanterns. There are obviously candles ...

Re: Axe Carry

My sword on the other hand can pivot in multiple directions as it's attached via a frog. Well, how about a frog for your axe, or even attaching the axe directly to the sword sheath? I know a lot of people like the PJ Strider sword with the knife on the scabbard. Just do that with an axe instead. So...

Re: Axe Carry

I carry a tomahawk. I've got a leather cover over the blade and then just drop it into a loop on my belt. What is the danger here? As long as you've got a sheath on the blade what makes it downright dangerous on a belt? I can only think of a tripping hazard depending on the length of the handle.
