Re: Water Treatment on the Trail
Even a simple bandana is a great first stage filter to get the particles out. I also know many of us carry some char cloth for fire starting. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit (you may be able to dry it out later, but no guarantees.) it could be wrapped up with a bandana for a bit of additional ...

Re: Fire steel
the pommel of a knife is ususlly not hardened enough to throw sparks easily, and a knife built like they would have been doing at the time you're talking about would have a softer metal as the pommel like brass as the construction style... I hadn't thought of it like that. My blades are all zombie ...

Re: Anyone experimented with a Ruana Cloak before?
I wear one at home whenever it's cold, and I don't bother attaching a hood to it for a lot of reasons including the one in that video. If you need a hood, you can always take left (or right) side, toss it over the right shoulder, then from that side toss it over your head. Actually look at the foll...

Re: Fire steel
Seems to me that fire steel is just extra weight to cary around. If I was around a thousand years ago, I would probably just use the pommel of my knife. the pommel of a knife is ususlly not hardened enough to throw sparks easily, and a knife built like they would have been doing at the time you're ...

Re: Leather Snapsack wanted
Sure! It's a fairly simple pattern, but there's a couple non-obvious things in the construction. I'll post a drawing and some notes soon - though I'll probably not have time until this weekend. If you want to start looking for materials, you'll need a fairly light weight hide* (I'd suggest vegtan g...

Re: Oilskin duster
i will take this!! as my first purchase from this sweet ranger's forum, how do i go about the details? Aw shucks, this piece actually found its new home earlier this winter. Since I can't delete the thread, I'll edit the original post to reflect that. I totally forgot I had even made this listing! ...

Re: Eriador quiver "kit" - any interest?
i see that this second quiver is sold, but i would LOVE the pattern for it!! am a craftsperson myself and building out my kit is tons of fun but my quiver is far over built for this get-up and if i could build your version, id fit right in!! the snapsak look awesome too, and i'd love a pattern for i...

Re: Rope soled boots
i recently did a proof of concept with some osberg turnshoes and have sketched out and plan to build proper knee high boots from the base i have created, walking around on vegtan soled shoes was a slippery affair and i wondered about something like this. i went the "disassemble and hammer some ...

Re: Leather Snapsack wanted
I also have a mostly done linen lined goatskin snapsack on my "Dunedain" pattern that I wouldn't mind letting go of... i am handy with the needle and thread, and have been planning on making a snapsack of my own but i had no decent design ideas and hadn't seen one of these before. i would...

Re: Anyone experimented with a Ruana Cloak before?
i have made several from blankets and love them!! first a poly thrift store blanket became a poncho with a diamond neck hole, then that got a slit and became my new favorite thing. i turned a double layered throw (faux sheepswool one side camo microfiber opposite) into one with a circle neckhole and...
