Re: Survival wisdom

Looks like a good coffee table book, flick through it and pick up a few things. I assume it's Northern American focused?

What do you think? Personally I think it marries up really well. Easy enough from here to change the decoration on the guard to runic inscription and have something like a stylized lonely mountain with the arkenstone radiating underneath it on the pommel.

Re: Is this sword Khazad?

Ahhh right. Well Dwarven swords in particular have always confused me somewhat. The Dwarves of the Iron Hills carry short broad swords which given stature, relative strength and inclination to fight underground makes sense but how do they use them? How does Thorin wield an Elvish longsword? I have a...

Re: Lets talk Eorlingas.

I shared some of my opinions in this thread a while back which may be worth visiting, that the descriptions we have of the Rohirrim seem more to match the Svear than the Normans. https://www.middleearthrangers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4617 As to the helm question I feel my own simple helm marries t...

Re: Lets talk Eorlingas.

Apologies Wilhelm for not replying sooner, I too approached my Rohan portrayal from a living history background and have a few suggestions about where to begin. As always with starting out on this journey (and like Udwin) I recommend having a think about who exactly it is that you're hoping to portr...

Re: Treasure!

Rangers would have need of coinage for their less overt dealings with locals when necessary. I like adding a few extra non coin based trinkets to my purse thinking in the vein of certain groups having need of more than just coin. It all depends where your patrol takes you but I can see the wife of ...

Re: Is this sword Khazad?

The picture is tiny so my first though was the Suontaka sword, a Viking age find from a high status female burial rather unusual in it's design which is why it doesn't immediately jump out as viking. But I think it's actually the one from Langeid, Norway. https://www.castlekeep.co.uk/viking-swords/c...

Re: New utility/fighting knife

If I was ever going to send you something like that, it would likely be a.... LAMP with a unique interior. I'm fairly sure you're joking but just in case you must know that however well intentioned this is a terrible idea. It's essentially importation of an illegal weapon and if it gets picked up t...

Re: Minyacálë - Numenorean Eket (Process Thread)

Firstly let me welcome you to the boards Cevelentir! May your stay be long and productive. Secondly, the designs look beautiful as Davids stuff always does (even nicer once Elleth overlaid the Numenorean motifs) Thirdly, as someone who has commissioned a few high value pieces in my time I couldn't h...

Re: Over nighter

I love that sparse hilly woodland, very eastern side of the Misty Mountains.

Thanks for sharing Andy, it has been a lean year here for any sort of outing and seeing this helps keep me motivated.

Apologies for the delay, this is the sort of elegant/functional long fighting knife I picture it as - white handled and silver fitting in there as well.

Re: So what's up with Nazgûl and their mounts?

Why did the death of their horses matter at the Ford of Bruinen? Why couldn't the Nazgûl just keep going? I don't think it was the loss of the horses that stopped them but rather the fact that the ring had passed under the protection of Elrond. If they had a large army nearby then perhaps they may ...

Re: Dwarven Naming conventions

I've always thought because Dwarves have a single outer name and don't tend to have family names, Family names as a whole don't seem to proliferate outside of the Shire and Bree. Add to that we usually see singular Dwarves or smaller groups where there's no need to differentiate between them. It's ...

Looking at Dwarven names there are only a handful that I can see, Ironfoot and Oakenshield being the ...

Re: White Handled Knife

Then Legolas gave into his hand his silver-hafted knife, his quiver and his bow I'm thinking that anything decorated with silver is usually more of a weapon than a tool, also I took a tour through the Lord of the Rings and it seems that the professor assigns the prefix 'long' to knives that are bei...
