Re: Dwarven Naming conventions
Australia is nickname ground zero, I've literally worked alongside people for over a year and didn't know their real names. Dad was stationed up in "The wet end" for a few years back in the 50's, he told me about it As I mentioned earlier in the thread many of Tolkeins Dwarves take names ...

Re: Dwarven Naming conventions
Me again.
I know that Barron has an older sister (its part of his backstory) and I even decided to name her Gudron, the part I'm up in the air about is weather to she would use her patronym or an Ick-name.
Shes a skilled cutler and married...... But I am at a loss for a good Ick

Is this sword Khazad?
I'm subscribed to Matt Easton's Youtube channel and I just watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyRXMNHt2oU . Its a sword type I'd not seen before, but the first thought that popped into my head is "That hilt looks Dwarvish". I know its not very WETA but I think that sometimes they...

Re: White Handled Knife
Ah. I see what you're after..... Hunting knife not fighting knife
The third one is a long hunter knife and the first is a gralloching knife (according to the photo captions)

Re: White Handled Knife
I must admit, in my head Elves lean towards long and slender blades to make the most of their speed and dexterity (and the fact that they have literally Forever to practice). Why smash though a guard when you can just weave around it? https://bladesmithsforum.com/uploads/monthly_06_2014/post-1794-0-...

Re: gambeson / jacks and water?
Theres a Tods Workshop vid on greasing arrowshafts for better penetration.... But I think that test was on shields?
I don't know if a greasy gambeson is less protective then a dry one.
When wet, fabric is harder to cut through. Especially linen or wool.
I suppose theres always paint

Re: Lets talk Eorlingas.
I think 24" is more of a large buckler really, and is a bit small in a wall.... With shieldwalls and phalanx each man protects the man on his left as much as himself an when 'a horse' you need the larger boards to cover your knees. However, when fighting solo on foot and (probably) in forest a ...

Re: What's everyone working on?
ForgeCorvus, good eye! You're right, it's a reproduction canteen for the American Civil War era - it came covered in that wool, and was carried that way in period as well. This one's a cheat though - it has a stainless steel body, since real tinware can rust so easily. I'm not MERS-picky about ever...

Re: What's everyone working on?
Wilhelm, it looks like an ACW tin canteen... I hadn't noticed it prior to your asking though, so its not screamingly obvious as non-Middle Earth. Elleth, I think its the ticking that gives it a Hobbity vibe. I could imagine Samwise or the Gaffer wearing a ticking workshirt while puttering around a g...

Re: Good enough for the common man
I think we're on the same page really, my take on Tod's vid (as opposed to what Tod was actually talking about) was less about sloppy piecework made down to a price (my first job was as a blacksmith and we had to compete with cheap crap thrown together by paid monkeys ) and more on the concept that ...

Re: Good enough for the common man
I suppose what I'm trying to get at is if a 21st century Europian/North American being decides to make a shirt (to pick something at random) and cuts it too tight in the body or short in the sleeve then what they tend to do is get another bit of fabric and remake the peice at fault..... An Eriadoria...

Re: Antler as a knife handle material
The other thing worth mentioning. Deer shed their antlers, so that material is more acceptable then bone or horn to some peoples ethics. As a plus, antler is tough stuff (but then I suppose it needs to be, given what the average stag does with them).... After all the flint mines at Grimes Graves wer...
