Re: True WMA in film
Plenty! "What about their legs? They don't need those..." Fool of a took! Think man! You would be well within grabbing distance before you got close to longsword range of a trolls leg let along whatever weapon it was using. There's a reason Abrecan is buried under a stone in the woods beh...

Re: Anyone know of "Jubilee Tower" of Darwen?
Darwin is in....Australia? Are there a lot of older European style towers like that there? Only things in Darwin are mosquitoes, crocs and sweat. it is what we over here would call a "folly", something just built to look impressive Thank you so much for this, I had no idea that was the na...

Re: What's everyone working on?
Finished up the tunic and arm wraps, going to repair my cloak and then work on belt pouches next. Hoo boy that's coming along from the last time I saw it, well done mate! Recently made these water bottles. Each holds 32 oz. That's some fine work Ben, how did you seal them? Wax or pitch? (or the dar...

Re: True WMA in film
Not a film per se but I've been told this short fight scene is quite accurate and demonstrates several WMA techniques and methods throughout the fight scene. Appropriate to Middle-earth? Maybe, maybe not. But highly interesting to see a (admittedly slightly dramatized) realistic sword-fight from fe...

Re: New legbands from Kram Bu.
Not much to add here that I didn't on your facebook post. Loving seeing your kit come together Cim, you're going to some of my favourite craftspeople so that shouldn't come as a surprise. You're a tall beast though, at 4.5m I would be able to mummify half my body and you can't even get over your fee...

Re: Question on intro bows
I would Strongly suggest against these for anyone who's not portraying a Rider of Rohan, Even then I am not a fan of them. I'm aware that they are probably the best for the task but we know who and where the Rohirrrim are drawn from and those sort of bows simply were not around. Plenty of shortbow ...

Re: The battle of Framsburg
Thanks Iodo, Tom and Loon. This is not just a flight of fancy; clearly you have put some serious effort in. Well done. Having attempted alliterative verse, I know it's hard to do on its own, let alone including the kennings for the full archaic Germanic flavor. I salute you. Alliterative verse is so...

Re: Interesting Dwarven Archers illustrations
This is actually an example of a realistic depiction of technique in art. I have a replica 12th century Norman bow and it's quite small. There is no way you can draw it traditionally without snapping it and so you end up drawing it to either your nose OR exactly as you see on the tapestry.

Re: Thinking about the birrus...
I've also heard of unhemmed edges from some very very strict New England 18th c. reenactors associated with the local museums/historic sites. Given how persnickety they are with everything else they do, I assume they have solid evidence. That was in context of tightly woven and I think well-fulled ...

Re: Thinking about the birrus...
I've been told on a lot of occasions by people at medieval reenactment events etc... that unhemmed is the "correct" way of making a wool cloak, because it sheds water better I suspect they have only got it half right there Iodo. What I think they are talking about is a properly woven cloa...

Re: Windlass dagger project
Also it would be best to describe it as "Re-enactment equipment" on the customs paperwork. Unfortunately there are no guarantees that this or any of the old safeguards work as it all comes down to how trigger happy the person operating the Xray is on the day. I had a hell of a time gettin...
