I too own one, however everyone has their own idea of rangers so maybe we need something recognized across the boards and not just book or film fandom

Since a widespread medallion or other oath has been too different for most of us could we come up with a specific greeting?

Any ideas?

I know this is a necropost but I really think we should resurrect this idea, and I'm thinking Rifter was on to something with the greeting thing. We could just do something as simple as "Well met" which will cover all Rangers.

To continue the necro:

Certainly you wouldn't trust a Ranger to guard your back unless he was duly initiated:

Okay, that silliness aside, I have scheduled on March 19, with my group, a ritual, Erukyermë, to mark the coming of the Springtide. It is one of the Three Prayers.
Basically, the group hikes up a nearby hill/mountain together, and there recites poetry and whatnot.

I hate to revive a post long dead, but I think that this has real potential. I just wanted to raise an idea about the oath in specifics. Below I am copying the Oath of Fealty that Meera and Jojen Reed swore to Brandon Stark in the Song of Ice and Fire series. I know it's not Tolkien, but I love this oath, especially the references to natural elements such as Earth, Water, Bronze, Iron, etc. Something to think about with our own oath of fealty.

"To Winterfell we pledge the faith of Greywater. Hearth and harvest we yield up to you, my lord. Our swords and spears and arrows are yours to command. Grant mercy to our weak, help to our helpless, bring justice to all, and we shall never fail you." — Both

"I swear it by earth and water." — Jojen

"I swear it by bronze and iron." — Meera

"We swear it by ice and fire." — Both
I wish only for green trees, cool wine, a strong bow, and a swift arrow

Here is the oath of Fëanor, from "Morgoth's Ring". This might also provide a fine base for other oaths.

“Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean
Brood of Morgoth or bright Vala,
Elda or Maia or aftercomer,
Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth,
Neither law, nor love, nor league of swords,
Dread nor danger, not Doom itself
Shall defend him from Fëanor, and Fëanor’s kin,
Whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh,
Finding keepeth or afar casteth
A Silmaril. This swear we all…
Death we will deal him ere Day’s ending,
Woe unto world’s end! Our word hear thou,
Eru Allfather! To the everlasting
Darkness doom us if our deed faileth…
On the holy mountain hear in witness
and our vow remember,
Manwë and Varda!"
Love not too well the work of thy hands and the devices of thy heart; and remember that the true hope of the Noldor lieth in the West and cometh from the sea.
