Asbjorn The Sailor

Post by Asbjorn »

Asbjorn was thinking of his parents while he was drifting along with the current, about his fathers awesome tale where he killed 10 trolls singlehandely or about his mother whos quick jaw would as easily get her into trouble as out of them. As he laid there thinking about them he felt sad that he never got to meet them and that he never got the awesome power of shape-shifting his father had or his mothers quick mouth.
You see his father was a beorning and his mother was from Laketown, they meet one night when his father Bjarni was in Laketown for supplies. His mother Asa was a waitress in the local inn and was being harassed by some mercenarys looking for work of course she didnt let them do as they pleased. The words that came out of Asas mouth would make the most hardend sailor red with shame and you could see the mercenarys furious faces when they started to get up to get revenge. Asa that quickly realised her problem was about to fix it when Bjarni stepped in and put his massive hand on two of the mercenarys shoulders and forced them to sit down again. "Now i really want to have a nice and quiet evening tonight" Bjarni said with a rumbling voice that could make Sauron shiver.
Asa who had lived in Laketown her whole life was taken aback by the help from the giant man, she had never gotten help from people in Laketown before because they saw it as she deserved it with a mouth as her. Bjorni looked at her nodded and walked back to his table, the mercenaries got out of thare as fast as they could and Asa smiled and thought perfect thats the man im going to marry. A little more than a year had gone by in a flash when a strange man was knocking on the door to their cabin and was asking if this was the house of Bjarni The Mountain.
He was a Dunedain ranger that had come to collect on a promise Bjarnis father had made him, Bjarnis father had promised that his first born son would follow the ranger west to help protect Eriador its enemies because he had saved Bjarnis mother. Asa knew that Bjarni would fulfill the promise his father had made to the ranger and convinced him that she was going too and with her quick mouth Bjarni stood no chance. So with the ranger as a guide they started heading towards the forest Eryn Vorn in south of Erindor becouse the rangers job was too watch over the entrace to the baranduin river so that no pirates from the south could sail up the river without being seen. As they where closing in on Lond Daer one night they where ambushed by ten hill trolls, Bjarni with lightning reflexes turned into a giant bear and charged the trolls. The ranger knew that this was going to end badly so he forced Asa to run with him while Bjarni charged the trolls, the ranger knew that this was exactly what Bjarni wanted him to do even if it stung his heart to do so. Later that night the ranger silently returned to try and save his friend although he knew this was unlikely, when he got to the spot he couldnt belive his eyes around the spot was thorn up trolls all ten of them.
Up against a three was his big friend with big gashes across his body and the corossive blood of the trolls eating away at his arms. Bjarni started coughing and out of the forest Asa came running, Bjarni started talking "Sorry ranger i cant fulfill the promise my father made to you but my child whos growing in my beautiful wife stomach will". Asa and the ranger buried Bjarni on a hill overlooking Lond Daer and the story of a mighty beorning was known to all Dunedain there after. Asa knew that fulfilling the promise would help her husband in the next life so she followed the ranger home where she gave birth to a giant boy but due to complications she was dying, she told the ranger to name him after his father and his mother.

More to come.

Clever backstory :P
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.

I hate trolls..

Looking forward to hearing the rest Asbjorn
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Asbjorn who grew up with the ranger and his family was taught everything the ranger knew and even the Corsairs of Umbar taught him how to sail and read the wind and its there we will pick up our story again.
Asbjorn no more than a teenager but bigger than most men was told he needed to go on a journey to get more experience of the world and as highly trained teenager who thought he was the world decided to go south-east and end the threat of the Corsairs of Umbar forever. The journey south-east was long and boring for Asbjorn who thought there would be adventure and big battles everywhere, but as he soon found out most of the settlements he came across was pretty high in spirits, a few years prior the twenty-fifth ruling steward of Gondor had killed the captain of the Haven the ruler of Umbar, so the southern coast was mostly peaceful only some small rading partys would come up from the south and those where more of a nuisance.
As Asbjorn was travelling south he got onboard a sailling vessel in Barad Harn, a month in sailing south they where ambused by some pirates from Umbar and a fight begins, in the begining it goes well as Asbjorn puts arrow after arrow in the pirates but when they inevitable gets close enough to board Asbjorns ship the fight starts to go wrong. The pirates saw that Asbjorn was to much to handle for one man alone but they also saw that his experience on the water was none existant, so they started to rock the boat and attack from the angles Asbjorn couldent see and it didnt take long for Asbjorn to be knocked out. When Asbjorn finally woke up again he felt ashamed that he would get caught by such means as a bad foothold and he could hear the rangers worlds in his head explaning that a good foothold is everything in a fight without it you cant move well enough too both attack and defend and if you are only defending you will lose in the end.
The pirates took Asbjorn and the other prisoners back to Umbar and there he was put up for auction, Asbjorn had been taught many languages as the ranger drilled it in his skull that languages is a key thing you should learn otherwise you cant be the best scout and now he was glad his teacher was so strict with him on things like languages and mathematics because he could understand the cosairs and make it seem that he couldent. Asbjorn quickly realised that he was worth big money to people who ran some kind of fighting rings in the desert east of Umbar but didnt make it known and made a mental note too keep a close watch on the sky so he would know the way back to Umbar. It took three weeks on a carriage drawn by two animals that he later would know as camels, the road if you could call it that it was more of a sea of sand going up and down and Asbjorn couldent be more than amazed that these people could navigate here when even he had some problems with it because they went from one oasis to another with pinpoint accuracy and he quickly understood that if he was going to make it back he needed help. When they finally reached the place they where going all Asbjorn could see was big stone building shaped like an egg, he remembered his teacher calling the shape an oval, the building was completly black and smooth and all around it was make shift camps with tents and some kind of boats but he had never seen boats on land before later he learned these boats sailed the sand further east because you could not walk on this sand and they where draged here by camels otherwise animals in the sand would destroy them. No one knew who had made the stone structure and the clans used it as an arena because once you where lowerd in there where no escape, the walls where too high and too smooth too get any grip so once you where lowerd down in the middle you had no choice but to fight.
Asbjorn spent many years in this hell and fought beasts and men and had tried to escape more then once just to get caught and fight more ferocious beasts and men. But it also made him shapeshift for the first time and once he shifted for the first time his strength more than doubled and made him unstoppable so the clans that ran this fighting arena tried everything to kill him in the arena they sent scorpions as big as a horse after him, some kind of sand fish lurking just beneth the surface but nothing worked so they started too take away his weapons and even blocked his ability to shapeshift with the help of some witches but nothing worked and in the end the other clans wouldent even send in people or beasts to fight him anymore. Asbjorn which had lived here for more than 4 years, longer than any other fighter, was granted freedom by the clans just because they knew such a warrior you just dont kill you make him fight so they sent him out into the desert without help and with only one gulp of water. Asbjorn was both confident and afraid at the same time because he had prepared himself for years and had made sure he never forgotten the way they took to make it to this arena and afraid because he knew the beasts that was lurking in this desert but most afraid of all he was of the sun because that was the one thing that almost killed him more then once when he was fighting beasts. The way back to Umbar was treacherous but was made easier when he was attacked on the way by some clansmen that saw him as easy prey so after winning the fight and collecting the belongings of the men he once again set out to get back to Umbar, Asbjorn didnt hit the mark as beautifully as the clans would have but close enough that he could see Umbar in the distance.
Once he was back in Umbar he sold of all the belongings of the clansmen and outfitted himself with some good light armor some throwing knives and two axes one two-handed and one one-handed after that he started to look for a ship home but for some reason most of the ships werent going up north but instead just sat idly by in port, but Asbjorn finally found ship that would atleast sail north the only problem they werent taking passengers only mercenarys looking too plunder so seeing no other choice but to become a mercenary he signed up but that would also mean he needed to work on the ship. The corsairs was laughing their asses of once they where away, Asbjorn who couldent even tie the rope right was the best amusement they could have but they also knew that they had to teach him the ropes so once the fighting started he could make use of his experience because they had seen what he could do in the tryouts for crew. Asbjorn liked the life on the sea and learned everything the corsairs could teach him about sailing and all the tactics that would involve a ship, after a few months they finally set foot on ground west of Linhir in Gondor Asbjorn knew that the stay would only be temporary to stock up on some food and water incase there wasnt enough food where they would raid so he made himself available as a scout so they wouldnt be detected but instead headed straight for Linhir where he made himself known to be a ranger and that there was raiding party west of Linhir that was collecting supplies so they could start raiding with no concern. So with some soldiers and a horse Asbjorn rode west and quickly dispatched of the corsairs and once he exchanged some pleasantries with the guards of Linhir he bought a horse and headed home, once he got home the ranger greeted him with a smile and said "A little longer than i would have liked but i bet you have some strories to tell" Asbjorn smiled and started to tell the ranger and his family all about his adventures.
After he was finished the ranger pointed at Asbjorns left eye and said "I guess you lost the eye while fighting some beasts or someting" Asbjorn a little ashamed answered "No not exactly i lost it by washing some plates right after my first transformation to a bear and crushed a plate in my hands so a shard flew up into my eye and made it useless" the ranger looked at him an started to laugh.

this is great :P it has the feeling of mythology about it - you have a wild imagination
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.
