Song from the Golden Perch

Post by Eofor »

Here is a snippet of a song that I heard many years ago while visiting Stock in the Eastfarthing of the Shire.
It was being sung at closing time by a handful of Halflings in a fine inn called ‘The Golden Perch’. I wish I could remember more but the splendid beer at the Perch lends itself to making memories, not keeping them.

Oh I love to roam under bright warm sun
And to camp under stars is a lot of fun
But of no less joy is the homeward path
To food and drink beside the hearth

Oh the wind may howl and the wind may blow
And there may be rain and there may be snow
But we'll see no snow and we'll fear no gale
Just bring more pie and bring more ale!

Now the time has come to seek our beds
And its like we'll wake with aching heads
But it wont be long till we roam once more
Swept up by the path outside the door

- Excerpt from 'A lifetime of travel' by Fineas Farwender.

A poor recreation of the jollity present at the Perch that night.

But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

I could envision that being sung by Hobbits!

Where I live is finally succumbing to some of the trials and tribulations so many of you have faced the past year and Middle Earth is becoming more a refuge than ever.

I find that putting together a poem or song keeps my mind busy for much of a day so I would be playing around like this even if there wasn't an audience.

But it's nice to know that some of you enjoy them, and I thank you for your comments.
Perhaps something Dwarvish or in the Heroic style of Rohan next.
