THE FANTASY RANGER - Historical Origin And Most Effective Weapons (Video)

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

I also like some of Skallagrim's stuff.

While I share the common opinion here with respect to Shad, I still monitor his channel.

I posted this thread because of the Ranger aspect of the video.

The idea of a Ranger a-foot using a short (not a Grosse) Messer makes a lot of sense to me. It is easier to move around with and is dual use. It's a sword-knife. It would work well with a belt axe.

I don't have one, but was looking at this for the future:

Cold Steel's Hunting Sword (a" Hanger") would also fit what he discusses:

Cold steel tend to over engineer their swords and make then too heavy and not balanced all that good (from the ones i have handled)

for messers i think https://landsknechtemporium.com/ is the way to go.

i am yet to purchase on of their messers (will do before the end of the year) but they look nicer, have a few custom options and are more accurate in construction weight and balance

Thanks for the link.

They have some nice stuff.

With reaspect to CS swords, that is certainly true of some of them.

I was very pleased with their Italian Long Sword. It is relatively light, quick and nimble. I have only had it for about a year and haven't had the problems associated with the loose guard that was reported when they first came out. To be fair, I haven't used it a whole lot.

While not for a Ranger's kit, the CS Italian Duelling Saber is very light. I actually wish that the blade was slightly more robust. It is exceptionally quick and nimble.

Their English Backsword, a cut-and-thrust sword is almost "just right." I do wish that it was a little lighter. However, I still consider it Silver-esque as it is.

The MAA Messer has a 28" OAL and comes in just below 2 lbs. In the review by Skallagrim, he says that it is almost too light. I might eventually take a chance on one.
