2021 Kit and Skills Resolutions

Post by Cimrandir »

Hello all!

I apologize if I'm posting out of line with what seems to be an annual thread but I thought I'd jump in the fun with my 2021 kit and skills resolutions since I'm still kinda getting back into the swing of things.

Soft Kit

- Finish my cloak.
- Design and sew a tunic.
- Sew some pants/breeches.
- Sew a hood/mantle.
- Create/(commission?) a pair of shoes/boots.
- Make a belt.

Really, just getting the basics down.

Hard Kit

- Put together the basics of a functional kit (Water bottle, firestarter, etc.)
- Practice archery more often.
- Find a really good knife.

Skills/Other

- Continue developing my leather-crafting.
- Work on my hand-sewing skills.
- Be able to identify at least 20 native plants and trees.
- Like Greg in last years thread, meet one member here in person.
- Trek at least three times in above kit.
- Do one overnight camp in kit.

Really, if I can do half of these I'll be happy but I figured I'd set the bar high at first and see how it goes.

I wasn't really around last time so I'd be curious how everybody's 2020 goals went?

My goals for this year are very similar to yours. At the moment, I’m finishing up a water-skin, and I’ll be doing a sheath after that. My main goal is to have a basic functioning kit to do an overnight trip in the Spring.

The past year has been so messed up I haven't even given any thought to this, I have to start thinking :P but first on the list is to find a shaft for the mattock head I received from Eofor :P

1) I’ve got a new pair of boots that are half-finished that deserve some attention.
2) I’ve got a new yew stave I owe some time to.
3) I’ve got a giant log that’s going to require some time investment.
4) I’ve got two BIG solo treks in the works that I’d like to see through.
Now the sword shall come from under the cloak.

At this point, my ONLY Ranger-related resolution for 2021 is to actually put on my kit and go outside at least one single time.
...2020 was not a good year.

Honestly I'm tempted to say the exact same thing as you

What kind of knife are you looking for? I might be able to make some recommendations.
Tall ships and tall kings
Three times three,
What brought they from the foundered land
Over the flowing sea?
Seven stars and seven stones
And one white tree.

Well, I'm hoping to get my gear finished up to a functioning kit this year, and make at least one over night trail ride with my horse. This was the goal last year but one broken foot and ankle later, the horse is fat and sassy, all my sewing projects packed up and my gear spread all over. One thing i did accomplish last year was a lot of reading and note taking skills. I have been working on learning more about the local lands and what plants, small animals ect are here.
My main goals:
are to make a hood and cloak
some tunic/ dwarven shirts and waistcoat thing.
Some sort of boots
finish my belt kit ( emergency pouch with modern stuff, new small belt bag/ wallet, and knife sheath)
Finish my convertible pack (saddle bags that can be easily made into a pack for hiking)
put together a sleeping/ tent kit.

After last year I think these are big goals and maybe a little to much with the rest of life going on and moving but I want to get it all done.

Well after a really average start to 2021 I have to say that my goals are simple.

1 - Craft more
2 - Engage more with the community here
3 - First full overnight camp in MIddle Earth kit (not a viking camp)
4 - Stop lamenting about my new world countryside and embrace it. Visit and show you all some of the places we have here in Australia that I don't view as pretty but I hope you all will.

I remember you said you had a plan for it, can't wait to see it.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

I had hoped to have started this already, but a big project at work got in the way, I'll get to it at some time - hopefully soon :P
