a lineup of Middle-earth races by height

Post by Udwin »

It's all well and good to have sweet gear and kit, but to really get into the headspace of an individual in Middle-earth, it helps to be able to visualize things. I had started sketching these back in March (bored at a school board meeting!) and finally got them scanned in and touched up today.

On the Enemy's side, we have
-a small orc (what hobbits would probably call a 'goblin');
-a bow-legged, long-armed orc like Grishnakh;
-a taller orc (inspired by the armored chieftain who speared Frodo in Moria, and who could probably be a little taller);
-a Troll (in the vein of Bill, Bert, & Tom as opposed to an Olog-hai of Mordor);
-and a Balrog. (the flames didn't come out very well in the scan)

for the Free Peoples, we have
-a realistically-scaled Beorn (Bilbo was supposed to have been able to pass under his tunic without ducking, which would make Beorn about 12 or 13 feet high; I think it's much more likely that Bilbo exaggerated, instead of Beorn being several feet taller than Thingol 'tallest of all the Children of Ilúvatar');
-an Average-height, (non-Dunedain) Man (yours truly);
-Galadriel (6'4");
-a Dwarf (5' here for an average, though I'd imagine they were generally in the 4-5' range)
-Bilbo or an a average hobbit (3'6");
-Merry or Pippin (4'6"!--isn't Ent-draught incredible?);
-Aragorn II (6'6");
-a Wose (4'6" here, although given their general Neanderthal-ness, I'd be inclined to picture them a bit taller, more like 5'+);
-Elendil the Tall (2.5 ranga = 7'11");
-Thingol Greymantle (a hair under 9' here);
-and an Ent! ("at least 14 feet").

Nice!

Average American male is something like 5' 9" or so. Average Dutch man, thanks to genetics, diet and access to medical resources, is something like 6' 4".
