In honor of the Birthday of Mr. Bilbo Baggins...
Bilbo's Birthday!
September 22nd has round the bend
the old round door has been open'd!
and we are invited to step inside
a hobbit hole, warm and wide!
For today of all days is a celebration
a day esteemed by the local population
Not just any old day
It's Mister Bilbo Baggins' birthday!
I wonder what gifts there'll be this year!
Warm honey loaves and cold brown beer!
Flashes of light that explode in an instant!
Gandalf's attendance is always consistent!
With the gaggle of visitors to Bag End
Off to Erebor he'd send
Posts and invites and all sorts of greetings
to those Dwarves who prefer secret meetings
and to Rivendell a post would make it's way
announcing Mister Bilbo Baggins' birthday!
Every year it'd grow and grow
much like his belly, don't you know
his list of relatives too long to relate
and his friends learned never to be late
for a Hobbit feast was exactly that!
One must be careful where he sat!
For when food was involved (and it often was)
there wasn't much time for pause
because a Hobbit feast is exactly that!
Not much left but Gandalf's hat!
Big Furry feet thrown up on tables
more like fat little ponies tied up in stables
a well fed Hobbit didn't move too far
on a September night under the stars
and a full mug of ale sitting on his belly
his voice raised in a honey'd melody
to praise the host and to say,
"Hurrah for Mister Bilbo Baggins' Birthday!"
Presents flowed like ale from casks
Hobbit children would sit and bask
under the glow of Gandalf's fire
which lit up the whole of the Shire
Rockets and whistles and dragon fire sparks
Nary a one left a mark
save in the hearts of Hobbit children
and to the delights of lonely Men
Who watched the party from afar
Protecting the Shire under a Ranger star
and if they could they would say,
"It must be Mister Bilbo Baggin's Birthday!"
An Elf in Hobbiton, now there's a sight!
and dwarves with beards bound in silver bright!
And look, is that a Man or Bear?
And, bless me, an eagle swooping in the air!
Oh, and now this can't be true
who's the little Man in blue?
Whispering tunes to the local Hobbit band
to which we give a hearty hand
as a maiden in green dances in delight
here on this perfect night
the music now in the wind
off it goes to merrily send
invitations to all things fair and fay
"Come! It's Mister Bilbo Baggins' Birthday!"
Now comes the time for the cake!
No local baker knew it's make!
For it came from over the hills
Elvish magic didn't allow it to spill
when carried from over dale
and from under vale
to make it here today
to celebrate Mister Bilbo Baggins' Birthday!
Bilbo clapped at the sight
The ten layered cake looked a fright
in multi-layer creamed icing
it must have been too inviting
for Tookish lads to resist just a bite
for where runes had been writ in yellow cream script
proclaiming the birthday of Gandalf's once conscript
naught was left but the word "Day"
which left the crowd to say,
"One and All, hip, hip and hooray!
For Mister Bilbo Baggins' Birthday!"
And as the Hobbit took a bow
and words of thanks were said now
under a tall oak, just in the shadow
sat an old man, lit by the tallow
of a candle as he dipped his pen
and wrote of the celebration
a first hand account from Bag End
as told by one Professor Tolkien
who added his voice when all were heard to say,
"Mister Bilbo Baggins, Happy Birthday!"

Excellent!

I loved it! Thank you for writing that.

Excellent writing as always, Ken! Makes me want to grab a pint myself!
I'm no big drinker, but perhaps a trip to BevMo is in order...I wonder what their expression will look like when I request Dwarven Ale or the Green Dragon's Finest. Should be interesting.

Many thanks! I was honored that it was used by members of a Tolkien Society chapter a couple of years ago at their Birthday celebration. Remember to toast the Professor tonight at 9pm your local time!
The Professor!
