You guys.

YOU GUYS.

THIS POUCH.

It’s almost done - I have one more seam to finish - and HOOOOOOOOOLY COW I love how this thing has turned out! I cannot wait to post the final product. I feel confident saying that this represents a fairly significant leveling up for me.

OOOOOOOOOKAY HERE WE GO! :D

I’m sorry in advance for the picspam, but I’m really excited about this one!

So in the end, it turned out quite a bit different than Elleth’s pouch, due to a number of changes I sort of made on the fly. In particular, I decided to sew the front panel (which I made as an adjustable drawstring design) directly to the front of the rear panel, rather than sewing it inside out and then turning it. I’m a little torn, because I really liked the turned-out design of Elleth’s pouch, but I also thought this would be a fun opportunity to carry the decorative stitching through the whole thing, and in the end I’m super excited with how it looks! That being said, now that it’s all together, I have come to the realization that I what I have essentially done is accidentally re-invent the sporran.

But otherwise, yeah, extremely pleased with how this turned out! It has TONS of carrying capacity because of its drawstring-body design, and the extra pocket in the top flap adds EVEN MORE. I’m so glad Elleth did that on hers, because I absolutely love it, and it adds a TON of functionality. In terms of construction, every bit of leather on this thing (except the drawstring, which I may still swap out) is 100% hand dyed veg-tan leather, including the front body portion, which is made of a beautifully soft milled veg-tan leather from Tandy. I wish I could have used natural walnut dye on this, but it’s just not very practical for me, so I dyed it with Eco Flo Gel Antique, which I feel ultimately gave it a very nice, natural look, even if it’s not a historical dye - including a few minor blotches and imperfections that, try as I might, I was unable to even out. Then everything was sealed heavily with Satin Sheen, and finally a coat of Aussie Wax. It is all 100% hand-stitched with waxed linen thread (I actually added a bit of extra wax by way of a beeswax block I got from a local who used to have hives), and as you can see, I decided to continue that two-tone stitching that I did first on my new jerkin. Finally, the the buckle is a solid bronze Medieval pointed-D buckle that I believe I got from Viking Leathercrafts YEARS ago, and used to be on my quiver until I swapped it out for one of Elleth’s Gondorian buckles), so it has a really nice natural patina.

So yeah, there you go! I can’t wait to use it in the field! I’m not sure exactly what it will carry, but I’m hoping because of its compact design and deceptively large carrying capacity it will be able to replace most or all of the other pouches I normally carry. Ideally I would like to only wear this and a (yet-to-be-completed) needs-wallet with modern emergency gear (first aid kit, etc.) in terms of pouches when I’m out ranging. I may even specifically design my new trousers with pockets, when I finally get around to making them, so that I can carry my modern mundane stuff like keys, wallet, and phone in those rather than cluttering up my belt pouch.

Anyway, I hope you all like it! The lighting was difficult when I took these, so I had to color-correct them within an inch of their lives in order to get them to even remotely reflect the actual color of the thing as it looks in person. I included a couple pics of it on a mannequin as well which should also give you an idea of how it will look with the rest of my kit. I’m dying to finally get out in all of the new stuff, so y’know... hopefully soon!

Oh nicely done!

... I love how the cross-color stitching matches your jerkin. That's a nice subtle little touch. :)

Thanks folks!

I’m so please with this, overall. It did come out slightly larger than I intended it, but the size definitely makes it extremely versatile (or I think it will, in any case). Having it sit high, directly on the belt, is another thing I like about it, since it’s not going to be sort of flopping around on my hip or thigh, but combined with the size it might make it a little uncomfortable under the arm - not sure yet. It definitely needs some field testing. I’m thinking I may end up wearing it on my left side, between my two sword harness straps, so as to maximize my belt real-estate, so to speak. I don’t want to end up with a “Ranger utility belt,” but between the sword, the knife, this pouch, and a needs-wallet... yeah, that’s kind of what I’m ending up with, heh.

Thanks! I find that your little Yuletide pouch fits inside excellently and goes well with the overall look, so I may consistently pair them together, particularly for a little stash of tobacco and various pipe supplies, or maybe some tinder, and a fire striker. Not totally sure yet, but we’ll see! :D

That looks incredible! Both the pouch itself, and how well it fits with the rest of your gear!

So a while back, in preparation for the new quiver build I purchased three BEAUTIFUL hand-made buckles from a metalworker in Canada, and they just arrived today! I’m very excited! They have an aesthetic that feels very in keeping with the various Dúnedain cultural motifs we have established around here, and also similar to items from the New Line movies without being a direct reproduction of any of those props.
The seller is called Handmade Revolution, and I believe she actually designed this specific buckle originally for a member of the Canadian “Rangers of the North” group.
They will fit about a 1” strap, and I intend to use the one with the fancy etched plate on the front strap, so I can buckle it as shown here, which will show off the detailing on the plate.
