Breelander hat decoration WIP

Post by caedmon »

Cimrandir sent me a hat and some tablet woven band for Yule. The colors on the band so match the hat, that I almost attached it, but ultimately decided on another project for that. But that got me thinking of decorating the hat.

I decided to try my hand at embroidery. Here's where it's at now.

The runes are going to be some lines from Frodo's farewell song:

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

My my, that hat looks incredible now. I'm so glad you're pleased with it even with it being my first major hand-sewing project. Well done on the decoration. I wasn't sure if I should have attached the band or not but now I'm glad I didn't because the embroidery is awesome.

Very nice work so far :P
Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn: It's the beards.

Fantastic! West of the Moon, East of the Sun. was what i was originally going to ask Gulli to inscribe my walking stick with. Something about the line excites my imagination.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Some more work on it. I have all the runes done. I need to outline them in the light gray/green now.

But this now begs the question, what to put between the lines? I was going to do some 3rd age Dunedain motifs, but that' not really very Breeland for me. My vision of Bree is 17th-18th clothes and technology, with old germanic style.
Maybe something more Vendal style but in Breeish clothing?

Hrm.... this might be a goofy idea, but what about a sort of rememberance-book / lucky hat?

That is, wherever Cædmon might have wandered about the Breelands, he'd sit down and pick out a little reminder. The apple tree where he had that fine picnic, the fence he helped a friend repair, the ponies he helped catch after all those strange short folk came though town, so forth and so on? It seems in keeping with the verse, at least.

That's it. First the Haradrim warchief, now this. Elleth is telling all the stories from now on. That's a brilliant idea. Now I'm going to have to work up some backstory.

We're on the same page! I was going to suggest something on each face representing the four towns of Breeland.

The hill with a walled gate for Bree
Staddle on the back with smaller hobbit figures smoking pipeweed
Archet on one side with men and trees representing the Chetwood
Combe on the other side with both men and hobbits perhaps tilling a field.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.
