Getting snappy with snap sack's

Post by dwayne davis »

Ok among other projects over the past month. i have decided that a snap sack would be a very good Rangerly devise for carrying gear around in the feild. to that end i had a couple yards left over from my tent project. sitting down i did a little research and decided that an early 17th century pattern snap sack would fill the bill nicely. so i have made two of them. one dyed with Rit dye ( kelly green) the other left the natural coulor of the 10 oz canvas i used. both utilize a tump line made from harness grade leather.http://www.flickr.com/photos/74968682@N ... hotostream

the one on the wall was made for extended trips of several days to a week, the slightly smaller one more of a day pack, possably an over nite pack.

Those look great! How do they work with the rest of your kit? I would love to see a picture of that.

Thanks, so far it works good. i need to load one up all the way and go for a day hike with it on. but there is very little slipping around on my back with it. im curently thinking of a way to tie off my diamond fly onto it. i like snap sacks because you have accsess to either end. no digging out all youre gear to get at one thing. ill see what i can do about a pic of me wearing it. not hard to make, even hand sewing them ( about hour and half from start to finish)

They look great Dwayne!
I know one of the great charms of this item is the simplicity, but does anyone happen to have a pattern or short tutorial here on the site for these. Little particulars would be helpful.
It would be fun to make one without having to reinvent the wheel!

I'm sure Dwayne or one of the others who have made or use them will be along shortly but here's a start. http://www.earlrivers.org.uk/page.php?86

Wow! outstanding Johnathan!

Like I said it is simple but just having some basic measurements will make the project so much eisier and enjoyable!

Thanks!

Just a suggestion to balance your kit: If you plan on carrying a quiver, attach your snap sack to the shoulder strap so it hangs over the front of your chest. The weight of the snap sack and the top of your quiver will balence the load so your quiver doesn't slide down your back.

Balanced load equals reduced muscle strain.

Happy Trails !

Thanks pete. thats an idea. Ringulf,as far as a pattern goes. i took a peice of canvas 24 inches long by 20 inches wide. on the 24 inch long ends i folded each one over and sewed a hemm then ironed it flat, then i folded the fabric on the 20 inch side with the inside out and folded the edges over once and sewed the length of it. i hand sewed it using a simple whip stich along the leading edge of the hemm. then ironed that flat too. i finished it by turning it right side out and gave it one more general ironing. the tump line/strap was simply a lenght of leather strap which i split the ends about 9 inches in to make the ties. the finished length was roughly 19 inches long (after folding the hemms) and the opening is roughly 9 inches across. what ever size you chose to make remember to add and 1 1/2 to 3 inches for folding the hemms. ( hint if you iron the hemms befor you start sewing it tends to set them and keep them in place better till theyer stiched)

Awsome Dwayne thankyou!

And BTW, it was cool to see the Brooch pic on the photostream and I like the way you attached it. The loop and toggle method is perfect for this type of brooch!

I just saw that myself! You are right, friend Ringulf, that's exactly the perfect method. Any pics of you wearing the cloak with the toggle, Dwayne?
