Paging our resident plant lore folks...

Post by Elleth »

I took a bunch of pictures out in the forest today of some plants I don't recognize. I'm curious if any of y'all can identify them.
Location is New Hampshire, date is Sept 5 2020.

Here's the first -

This one is ALL OVER - at first I thought it was carrot, because it looks so much like our carrots if they go to seed. And the root smells vaguely carrot-like. But I've also a faint memory carrots have a toxic cousin you're not supposed to eat. Is that what this is?

This one's wild - I've never seen it before! Some kind of tree fruit - again, along the logging road.

Last one - this is a tree with little berries of some kind. I've seen it all over the place, sometimes *covered* in those berries. The leaves are a gorgeous silvery bluish/greyish green that really stands out from other plants. Not too different from holly, actually.

And here's an easy one I actually know - wild grape vine!

New England kinda reminds me of Frodo and Sam's walk through old Ithilien in that way: lots of stuff once planted now growing wild out back of beyond, long after whoever planted it has moved on.

The yellow one 5 could be Goldenrod but honestly they all look a bit weird to me.

Different continents and all.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Awesome - thanks guys!

Dang I have to hit the books.

Got some more for any that like a challenge.

The location for these is down by an old beaver pond. The beavers have moved on and all has mudded in a bit since they were here, but it's still a really wet area. We start with this funny orange flower...

This is an interesting one. I went down to the pond looking for cattails to try a foraging recipe. Didn't see any cattails, but these were all over the place. A strange grassy thing with spike seed pods. The root is very leek-like, but it doesn't smell oniony at all. More just....earth-scented. I'm wondering if this one's edible, but don't want to just go munching on strange greenery to see. :)

If the stem on #2 is hairy, it IS wild carrot/queen anne's lace. If the stem isn't hairy, it could be poison hemlock--probably the toxic relative you're thinking of.

#4 is really wild! - I wish it was a little clearer. If that compound leaf is part of it, I though it might be an unripe blurry black walnut, but I figure you can ID that on your own. I don't think you all have Pawpaw that far north, but it ripens late August down here so maybe close to ripening IF you had them. But the leaf structure is all wrong.

#8 is orange jewelweed, Impatiens biflora. Edible when young, and juicy stems good remedy for itches!
