We know he is a strong swimmer, he is one of only four to escape the assault on Osgiliath by swimming and so when his horse is lost he manages to salvage his sword, horn, helm, shield and fur lined cloak but those are all items that he would have been wearing.
As an interesting aside Eomer says that the horse which returns is one that they lent him so he lost his first horse due to ill fortune as well as his second?

Prepare to be boggled my good man! Boromir at the council of Elrond -
In this evil hour I have come on an errand over many dangerous leagues to Elrond: A hundred and ten days I have journey all alone
I can imagine it being what he wore but as much as I can see it, I can't get my mind past the practicality. The whole lost luggage and the fact swimming with all the above items would be hard enough without a big clunky chain as well.

Soooooooo now for the enxt can of worms - what do we all think Boromirs helm look like?
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Yes, I didn't mean to imply that he would have worn it openly on the road, just that as a seasoned traveler he would have found it to be easier to manage something a little smaller than a larger chain like that in his bags.
Persona : Cimrandir - late 3rd Age Dunedain
