Just realised this kind of lamp is essentially just a tallow candle where the mould is the same as the dish it's lit in

Yes, but better then candles
You can 'top-up' a slush lamp and it won't melt and slump if you leave it in the sun while you're out of camp (BTDT )
Thats a handy bit of bone, which part is it from? I take it that it naturally breaks into an awl like that?
Its been over thirty years since I last used clay to make anything (apart from mortaring rough stonework)..... Getting an urge to now

The needlebones are two small bones - this is a whole needlebone, not broken or shaped (though many are pointer than this one) - in the front legs of, i assume all cervids but at least deer. Useful for making awls, and, as the name suggests, needles, but they're honestly kind of a bother lol, they make disassembling the front legs much more awkward than the back, especially if you're doing a couple dozen at once.
If they were on a human they would run from the top of the heel up either side of the Achilles tendon (and are enmeshed within the sheath of that tendon)
