Once it got to leather! I used the needlebone of a deer for incising

Just realised this kind of lamp is essentially just a tallow candle where the mould is the same as the dish it's lit in

Yes, but better then candles
You can 'top-up' a slush lamp and it won't melt and slump if you leave it in the sun while you're out of camp (BTDT )

Thats a handy bit of bone, which part is it from? I take it that it naturally breaks into an awl like that?

Its been over thirty years since I last used clay to make anything (apart from mortaring rough stonework)..... Getting an urge to now

The needlebones are two small bones - this is a whole needlebone, not broken or shaped (though many are pointer than this one) - in the front legs of, i assume all cervids but at least deer. Useful for making awls, and, as the name suggests, needles, but they're honestly kind of a bother lol, they make disassembling the front legs much more awkward than the back, especially if you're doing a couple dozen at once.

If they were on a human they would run from the top of the heel up either side of the Achilles tendon (and are enmeshed within the sheath of that tendon)

She's actually posted several articles on DIY period lighting...some might be adaptable to what we do here. :P
