Family names as a whole don't seem to proliferate outside of the Shire and Bree. Add to that we usually see singular Dwarves or smaller groups where there's no need to differentiate between them. It's logical that some sort of system would exist in the larger colonies to distinguish between the common names but that's where I think the 'son of' comes into play (which may make an argument for even less use of female nicknames as they are fewer in number and therefore less likely to double up on names?)
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.
