Dwarf Names in The Hobbit: Manuscript Sources

Post by MiketheBlacksmith »

Jackson Crawford, Ph.D Just released this video about the sources of names used by Tolkien. 22.16 long

From the Video page on youtube...

"Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' features dwarves, plus the wizard Gandalf, named for dwarves in the poem 'Vǫluspá.' But there are different versions of that medieval text, and finding Tolkien's exact source is slightly complicated."

Interesting!

I know Thorin was originally named Gandalf, before he gave that name to the Wizard.

I always thought Tolkien did the names on purpose as they are pulled from norse texts, and his dwarves were heavily influenced from the norse area in the viking Era.
Being a big norse history fan found it to be one of the reasons to portray my persona as a Dwarven person.
