I cook and/or improvise with most of my food (I can make a MEAN hardtack with flour made from pounded acorn, and Cattail roots taste like extra-starchy potatoes if you cook them long enough) but there's one thing I refuse to cut corners on. Trader Joe's sells what they call "Middle Eastern Flat...

Laments are my favorite. I play a variety of traditional Irish Instruments, but the Pennywhistle, Low Whistle, and Uilleann Bagpipes are my favorite, and all three are exceptionally suited for laments. These aren't me playing, but you'll get the idea. The Pennywhistle and Low Whistle have always bee...

Agreed. The only thing that would hold up durability-wise are their leather articles, in the event that they were glued and stitched well. But hey, you can't blame a ranger for attempts at being stylish, can you? ;)

Side note: The recent updates to MERanger.com are awesome, Andy!

That's always how I've looked at it. I first got interested in the Kukri playing Dungeons and Dragons (always as a ranger, mind you.) At LARP events I used to go to when I was in my early teens, people would ask me (while in character) where the strange blade came from, and I would reply something t...

I don't know if this would be of use to anyone here, but awhile back I found a copy of Alfred Hutton's "Old Sword Play" (which I believe Peter mentioned in his first post) in *.pdf form online.

I hadn't heard about this contest...was it a random drawing, or was there some sort of swordmaking/design element involved? If the latter is true, is there a link to a page where the contest results can be viewed? Perhaps a link to a page where the submissions could be viewed as well? Pardon my lack...

I'll be sure to let you know should I decide to give up. This brings up an interesting question in my mind...I've done some searching and seem to have come up empty. Perhaps Andy would be best able to answer this, but has anyone found reason in Tolkien's work for the Kukri to be considered authentic...

Oh, no doubt their swords, bows, and armor are functional. But did they carry their wedge tents and the like to their base camp in a rangerlike fashion, or did they haul it all fifty feet from the cars? I'm sure their kit is completely functional, don't get me wrong...I just think their kit is lacki...

Poorly tempered and bent down the middle, close to a 20-degree angle off of true. It got stepped on at base camp a month or so ago, and, well...yeah. My attempts at straightening it didn't go too well. The handle was cracking too, so I figured it'd be best to lay it to rest for awhile, until I final...

Their costumes are LEGIT, but that's really all that they appear to be: costumes. They've got a fantastic knack for recreating the rangers in Ithilien from Peter Jackson's movies, whose overall appearance in gear I have a personal love for (and have mimicked, to some extent, with such things as face...

Since a lot of the Rangers on this board were leaning toward a sword around the size of a basilard/gladius/large seax, I'm curious to find out which style they'd use for a shorter blade like that. My camera is still absent my house, so the stock photo of my short sword will have to do, but I use an...

I can't say much for the historical breeds in either Europe nor Middle earth, but I CAN vouch for the potential usefulness of a canine to a Ranger. I don't take him with me often, but my black Labrador-Pointer Levi is the most friendly dog on the planet, and has a habit of chasing after squirrels, B...

I just wish that bladesmiths who make Falcatas would get a bit more creative with their handle designs. They all seem to sport that traditional hook-style handle, and I think a Falcata could look awesome with a simple hilt based off a Kukri's traditional grip, or even a pseudo-basket hilt. The sword...

WOW...how do you guys CARRY all of this? I understand that you're carrying backpacks, but I'm still somewhat shocked. That's a pretty big piece of Canvas to be carrying, Peter. I'd probably get annoyed by something like that, and haul it in to where I know I'll be staying, and leave it there for the...
